Pool Upgrades & Renovations outcome

Spillover spa retrofit

A spillover spa retrofit adds a separate spa shell (often raised above the pool deck) that overflows into the pool through a sheer-descent or weir feature.

What this project is

How spillover spa retrofit actually works.

A spillover spa retrofit adds a separate spa shell (often raised above the pool deck) that overflows into the pool through a sheer-descent or weir feature. The spa runs on its own heater and circulation but shares water and chemistry with the pool. The retrofit requires structural design for the new spa shell, additional plumbing for the spillover, separate heat pump or gas heater, and integration into the pool's existing automation if present.

Spillover spas are common as part of pool renovations that include deck expansion or layout reconfiguration. The visual and acoustic effect of the water feature adds significant value to backyard usability.

What Mark watches for

The execution details that decide outcome.

  • Pool circulation capacity. Spillover spa adds load to the existing filter and pump; may require upsize.

  • Heater sizing. Most existing pool heaters can't heat a spa to comfortable temperature on demand; budget a dedicated spa heater.

  • Drainage and deck integration. The spillover and the spa shell affect deck grading; plan in concert.
