Plaster resurfacing

Pool plaster has a service life of 10–12 years in Northeast Florida.

What this project is

How plaster resurfacing actually works.

Pool plaster has a service life of 10–12 years in Northeast Florida. Resurfacing involves draining the pool, sandblasting the existing surface to clean concrete, prepping the bond coat, and re-plastering — typically a 7–10 day process plus a 28-day cure under the new water. Done at the right time, it extends pool life by another decade; done late, the underlying concrete shell can become exposed and need patching first.

Material choice at resurfacing time matters: standard white plaster lasts ~10 years, marcite ~12, quartz finishes ~15, and pebble finishes (PebbleTec, PebbleSheen) 20–25. The upfront premium pays back across the second cycle in most cases.

What Mark watches for

The execution details that decide outcome.

  • Concrete shell condition before resurfacing. Hairline cracks or exposed rebar need patching first; resurfacing over compromised structure buys 2 years, not 15.

  • Equipment-pad coordination. Variable-speed pumps, salt cells, and automation upgrades all fit naturally at resurfacing time.

  • Tile and waterline coping at the same time. The cost premium during a resurface is small; doing it separately later is expensive.
