Composite deck (no rot)
A composite deck replaces traditional wood (typically pressure-treated pine or cedar) with composite boards (Trex, TimberTech, AZEK) made from recycled wood fiber and plastic.
How composite deck (no rot) actually works.
A composite deck replaces traditional wood (typically pressure-treated pine or cedar) with composite boards (Trex, TimberTech, AZEK) made from recycled wood fiber and plastic. The result is a deck that doesn't rot, doesn't need staining or sealing, resists fading, and lasts 25–30 years vs. 10–15 for wood. The trade-off is upfront cost — composite boards run 2–3x the price of pressure-treated wood.
For Northeast Florida's humid, UV-heavy climate, composite is increasingly the standard choice for new deck construction. Premium composite lines (Trex Transcend, TimberTech AZEK) carry 25–50 year warranties.
The execution details that decide outcome.
Joist spacing. Composite boards span shorter than traditional wood; framing needs to match.
Color selection. Lighter colors stay cooler in NE FL sun; darker colors get hot to the touch.
Edge and fascia detail. Composite-matching fascia reads cleaner than mixed-material edges.
