Floor-to-ceiling cabinets

Floor-to-ceiling cabinets eliminate the dust-collecting gap above standard upper cabinets and add significant storage capacity.

What this project is

How floor-to-ceiling cabinets actually works.

Floor-to-ceiling cabinets eliminate the dust-collecting gap above standard upper cabinets and add significant storage capacity. Most stock cabinet lines now offer the configuration — uppers either extend to 42" or 48" tall, or include a stacked second tier of glass-front display cabinets. The trade-off is that the top sections are reach-with-step-stool territory; storage there is for less-frequently-used items.

The configuration works best with 9-ft or 10-ft ceilings; lower 8-ft ceilings make the floor-to-ceiling look feel heavy. Crown molding or a small reveal at the ceiling line helps the cabinets read as architectural rather than added.

What Mark watches for

The execution details that decide outcome.

  • Ceiling height and visual proportion. 8-ft ceilings can feel cramped with floor-to-ceiling uppers.

  • Top-section access plan. A pull-down system or accessible storage solution prevents the top from becoming wasted space.

  • Crown molding or reveal detail. Cleaner transition to the ceiling reads as architectural.
