48-inch range + custom hood

A 48-inch range (six burners plus a griddle, or eight burners) is a serious home cooking platform.

What this project is

How 48-inch range + custom hood actually works.

A 48-inch range (six burners plus a griddle, or eight burners) is a serious home cooking platform. The install requires a dedicated 240V circuit (40A or 50A depending on the range model), a Type I or properly sized residential hood with the right CFM (often 900–1500 CFM for a 48-inch range), and exterior venting through the roof — recirculating hoods don't move the heat and moisture from this size of cooking surface effectively.

The custom hood itself is typically wrapped in millwork or stainless to match the kitchen's design language. Make-up air is required by FBC for hoods over 400 CFM — a separate inlet that admits replacement air when the hood is running.

What Mark watches for

The execution details that decide outcome.

  • Makeup air system. Required by code over 400 CFM; many install scopes miss it and fail final inspection.

  • Roof penetration for vent run. Plan against the existing roof structure and attic obstacles.

  • 240V circuit sizing. Verify the range's actual demand; many high-BTU units need 50A.
