Schluter waterproofing under tile
Schluter-Systems waterproofing (Ditra-XL for floors, Kerdi for walls) provides a continuous waterproof membrane under tile that meets ANSI A118.10.
How schluter waterproofing under tile actually works.
Schluter-Systems waterproofing (Ditra-XL for floors, Kerdi for walls) provides a continuous waterproof membrane under tile that meets ANSI A118.10. The system is more reliable than traditional sheet-membrane or hot-mop installation, and dramatically more reliable than relying on grout and tile alone to keep water out. For curbless showers, wet rooms, and steam showers, Schluter (or equivalent) is the right standard, not the upgrade.
Installation requires that the substrate is flat, dry, and clean; the membrane bonds to the substrate with thinset, the seams are sealed with banding, and the tile installs over the membrane with a second thinset coat. The system is roughly 10-15% more than basic substrate prep on a typical shower install.
The execution details that decide outcome.
Substrate prep before membrane. Schluter performs only as well as the substrate underneath.
Seam treatment with Schluter banding. The corners and seams are where waterproofing fails; banding is non-negotiable.
Wall-to-floor continuity. The membrane must wrap continuously from wall down into the pan.
