A curbless walk-in shower removes the threshold between the bathroom floor and the shower floor — water containment relies on slope, a linear drain, and a properly waterproofed shower pan rather than a curb. Done right, it reads as high-end design (popular in Ponte Vedra, Ponte Vedra Beach, Mandarin) AND accommodates aging-in-place needs (no step into the shower, wheelchair-accessible, no transition trip hazard).
The install is more complex than a curbed shower because the slope and drain placement must be accurate to a fraction of an inch. Slab construction (most NE FL homes) requires coring the slab to recess the linear drain assembly. Waterproofing must be continuous from the shower pan into the bathroom floor.
The execution details that decide outcome.
Slab coring for the linear drain. Required on slab construction; field-cutting after demo is the wrong approach.
Continuous waterproofing membrane. The pan-to-floor transition is the failure point on most curbless installs.
Tile slip rating. Wet-floor tile needs higher slip resistance; verify the DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) spec.
