Attached in-law wing with private door
An attached in-law wing extends the existing house with private living space (bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, living area) accessed by its own exterior door and connected to the main home by an interior door.
How attached in-law wing with private door actually works.
An attached in-law wing extends the existing house with private living space (bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, living area) accessed by its own exterior door and connected to the main home by an interior door. The result is generational living with privacy on both sides — parents have their own space and routines, the main household has its own life. Common in homes large enough to support the addition or with appropriate lot setbacks.
The build is similar to any single-story addition with the added complexity of sound isolation between the wing and the main living areas, dedicated HVAC zoning, and a private exterior entrance that respects both privacy and accessibility.
The execution details that decide outcome.
Sound isolation between wing and main house. STC-rated shared wall plus solid-core doors.
HVAC zoning. Different generations want different temperatures; a dedicated zone or mini-split solves the daily friction.
Private entrance design. Reads-as-design vs. reads-as-tacked-on; matters at sketch stage.
