Variable-Speed Pool Pump
A pool pump that operates at multiple speeds, mandated by Florida law since 2010 for residential pumps over 1HP.
Definition
What variable-speed pool pump actually means.
Variable-speed pumps run at low speed for most filtration hours and ramp to high speed only when needed (heater operation, pool features, deep cleaning). Total energy use drops 50–80% vs. single-speed equivalents. Florida Statute 553.954 has required variable-speed for residential pool pumps over 1HP since January 2010. The payback period on a retrofit is typically 18–48 months in utility savings.
