contracting
RFI (Request for Information)
A formal documented question from the contractor to the owner or designer requesting clarification on contract documents.
Definition
What rfi (request for information) actually means.
When the contractor encounters something in the construction drawings or specifications that needs clarification, an RFI documents the question and the response. RFIs prevent assumptions from becoming installed mistakes and create a written record of every decision made during construction. Common on commercial projects; less common in residential but increasingly used on complex remodels and additions.
