In-Law Suite
A semi-independent living space within or attached to a primary residence, typically used to house aging parents or extended family.
What in-law suite actually means.
An in-law suite typically includes a bedroom, bathroom, sitting area, and often a kitchenette — sized 450–900 sq ft, attached to the main house with private exterior access and a connecting interior door. The configuration sits between a standard guest room (less privacy) and a detached ADU (more independence). Sound isolation, separate HVAC zoning, and a private entrance distinguish a true in-law suite from a converted bedroom.
