AFCI (Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter)
An electrical safety device that interrupts a circuit when it detects the electrical signature of an arc, reducing residential fire risk.
What afci (arc-fault circuit interrupter) actually means.
AFCI protection is required by NEC in most residential 120V branch circuits supplying outlets in bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, hallways, and similar spaces. NEC 2023 expanded coverage to include more circuit types than earlier codes. Older homes typically need AFCI breaker upgrades during major electrical work. AFCI and GFCI protection are distinct (different fault types) and both are commonly required on the same circuits.
